Coordination meetings with the national authorities

1. With the Brazilian national authority

During January, March and April 2005, three coordination meetings were performed with the National Nuclear Energy Commission. During the first meeting, discussions were held on issues related to the operation of the commercial uranium enrichment plant of Indústrias Nucleares do Brasil. During the second meeting, the new Operations Official of the ABACC, Mrs. Laura Beatriz Castro, was introduced and issues were discussed with regard to the coordination of inspections on the operational programs of the Angra I and Angra II nuclear power plants and of the Aramar Technological Center. During the last meeting, the Accounting Official, Mr. Luis Alberto Giordano was introduced and analyses were made of the training program and of the update of the software for the auditing of records towards the electronic provision of the physical inventory listings. Both organizations agreed upon the need to call for another meeting, to be held during the second semester in 2005, in order to coordinate the tasks scheduled for the last three months of this year and for the first semester in 2006.

2. With the Argentine national authority

The first coordination meeting with the Safeguards Department of the Argentine Nuclear Regulatory Authority was held on May 5 and 6. On this occasion, a detailed review was made of the inspection activities scheduled in Argentina for the rest of the year 2005. Also, a proposal was made by the Argentinean party for the application of safeguards during the campaigns of recovery of tailings from the process in the conversion plant of Córdoba and comments were made regarding the activities scheduled for October involving the replacement of the surveillance system at the Embalse Nuclear Power Plant and the provisions being made for the training of ABACC inspectors. Additionally, a copy was delivered, for information purposes, on the guideline approved for the Embalse Nuclear Power Plant, as well as of the information received from the IAEA, as agreed upon during the last meeting of the Liaison Sub-committee, particularly of the listings of essential equipment for each type of facility.
