ABACC-IAEA technical meetings

On January 29, representatives of both agencies met at ABACC’s headquarters in order to agree on positions with a view to the meeting that was to be held early in the year. In this occasion, the ABACC introduced a flow chart in which alternatives of safeguards approaches were proposed for the commercial uranium enrichment plant of Indústrias Nucleares do Brasil (INB), making use of measures aimed at facilitating unannounced entries to the cascade hall and, consequently, at providing a better evaluation of the advantages and disadvantages of each one of the alternatives during the negotiation meeting.

A similar meeting was held at the ABACC headquarters on April 26. In this occasion, an analysis was made of a proposal for the safeguards approach prepared by the IAEA and taken as a basis for the discussions to be held during the enrichment meeting.

Finally, on March 31, in Vienna, following with the 19th coordination meeting, a technical discussion meeting was held with the IAEA in which the main actions to be undertaken during the second semester in 2005 were established.

Among several topics, a thorough analysis was made regarding the listing of pending activities at the INB’s commercial uranium enrichment plant, the installation of the DMOS surveillance system at the Embalse Nuclear Power Plant, the maintenance of the surveillance systems installed at Aramar, Atucha I and Angra II, and the replacement of defective fuel rods by structural rods in the Angra II fuel elements.
